Following the BBC’s second reply to 32,000 complaints I have sent off stage 2 of my complaint to the BBC Editorial Guidelines Unit.
The One Show Executive Editor, Sandy Smith continues to peddle the line that Clarkson “wasn’t being serious” as an excuse that he didn’t intend offence but this relies on what I call the only joking fallacy.
The only joking fallacy is the belief that because someone is joking or humorous that they can’t possibly intend to offend as well. It completely ignores the reality that any statement can have multiple purposes and meanings. It ignores how humour can divide like any other statement, making many laugh at the expense of others. Therefore, divisive humour can allow an intent to make people laugh and an intent to cause offence simultaneously. This of course is how racist jokes work and bullying in schools.
Divisive jokes have a triple effect on the offended by firstly, the offence in the joke, secondly, the lack of empathy by those who laugh and thirdly, the insincerity of those who deny there is a problem. For those who seek to divide the population divisive jokes are a very powerful tool.
I also raise the issue of non-consent in humour. This is something that hasn’t been clearly defined although once recognised makes a lot of sense. People are far more likely to laugh at a joke which derides them if they have implicitly consented to the joke in the first place. This may be because the comedian is inclusive of the people derided. It could be because the audience have performed an act that implies consent, such as paying to see a comedian live.

If there was ever an example of how the “liberal” media continually engages in class prejudice it is Jeremy Clarkson’s comments about public sector strikers on the One Show last night:
“I would have them all shot! I would take them outside and execute them in front of their families.”
Imagine if he had said that about an ethnic minority! That would quite rightly be an instant sacking offence for any media company, let alone the “impartial” BBC.
Imagine if Jeremy Clarkson had said: “I would take all the disabled outside and execute them in front of their families!”
Any decent person would expect the BBC to sack him. Lawyers would advice the BBC to do so, to avoid prosecution.
So why can he say that about public sector workers? Workers simply struggling for their right to a decent pension after 30 years of eroded pay and conditions while the rich have become super rich.
The poor are the tenth minority, unprotected from regular abuse, prejudice and discrimination.

The Guerrilla Thinktank has resurfaced from the sewers of internal despair to defend the underclass, poor and vulnerable from the daily onslaught of hatred showered upon us.
The first aim is to raise consciousness of class prejudice and discrimination, whenever and wherever it falls.
The second aim is to help realise the same statutory protection and legal rights for the underclass as the other nine minority groups.
